He flat out lied to lure the voters. Essentially stole a democratic election without any opposition. No accountability for his dishonest actions ; dumbed-down American’s merely shrug their shoulders & say, “oh well, he won’t be re-elected” “Anyways….Where’s LaBron James gonna end up?”.

Obama promised to end wars & war spending. He actually doubled both. In Afghanistan, its a fact that troops are guarding the $80 billion per year crop of opium used to manufacture heroin. Through his silence, he advocates drug trafficking, as well as theft of Afghanstan’s natural resources through military occupation.

Barack Obama has sworn an oath to defend the Constitution & the United States from all enemies; foreign and domestic. He has failed miserably for more reasons than can be described in this post, but for one; trillions given to Bankster’s.

General McChrystal, however, has also sworn an oath to the United States that I believe he should uphold. In fact, McChrystal should do the most honorable, patriotic deeds by removing Obama from office. In my opinion, regime change now will revitalize our democracy more peaceably & smoothly than if Obama were allowed to continue on his destructive path to dismantling the U.S. Constitution and selling the sovereignty of the US to foreign Banskter’s.

McChrystal is suppose to disobey unlawful orders, and must stand courageously as a warrior in the face of enemies opposed to our democracy.

I challenge each and every military warrior, especially my fellow Marines, to defend our freedom.

Remember your oath to our country. Obama & the elite’s who placed him in the position to effect the New World Order & destroy our country need to be eliminated sooner or later — make it sooner, for the sake of peace and prosperity in our country.

Do what is right for your people. Unjust war, senseless foreign occupation, seizing natural resources via military occupation, drug trafficking, and ignoring our own boarders (Mexico) is something your Commander in Chief is ordering you to do. Grow some “round courage between your legs” & refuse those unlawful orders.

General McChrystal, don’t let this opportunity pass. As the Obama administration says, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” [Rahm Emanuel]

On behalf of all Americans I challenge you to either be with freedom and democracy, or against us. Do the right thing & tell Obama that it’s time for regime change. Fire him.

Finally, a message to my fellow U.S. Marines, Obama has hi-hacked our Constitution; he advocates a police state; has given our checkbook to Bankster’s; and is now trying to control the heartbeat of our freedom — the internet. In my opinion, if you don’t see this as a justifiable reason for immediate regime change, it’s no wonder you can’t find Osama Bin Laden. He’s probably hiding in your barracks; right under your nose.

BP Oil Rig Explosion

The Deepwater Horizon oil rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico was built in South Korea. It was operated by a Swiss company under contract to a British oil firm. Primary responsibility for safety and other inspections rested not with the U.S. government but with the Republic of the Marshall Islands — a tiny, impoverished nation in the Pacific Ocean.

And the Marshall Islands, a maze of tiny atolls, many smaller than the ill-fated oil rig, outsourced many of its responsibilities to private companies.

Now, as the government tries to figure out what went wrong in the worst environmental catastrophe in U.S. history, this international patchwork of divided authority and sometimes conflicting priorities is emerging as a crucial underlying factor in the explosion of the rig.

Under International law, offshore oil rigs like the Deepwater Horizon are treated as ships, and companies are allowed to “register” them in unlikely places such as the Marshall Islands, Panama and Liberia — reducing the U.S. government’s role in inspecting and enforcing safety and other standards.

“Today, these oil rigs can operate under different, very minimal standards of inspection established by international maritime treaties,” said Rep. James L. Oberstar (D-Minn.), chairman of the House Transportation Committee.

Some offshore drilling experts, as well as some survivors of the explosion that led to the massive spill, say foreign registration also permitted a confusing command structure and understaffing — factors that may have contributed to the disaster.

Senior members of Congress — including Oberstar and House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick J. Rahall II (D-W.Va.) — have begun looking into the inspection and staffing issues. The House Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation will hold a hearing Thursday on foreign-flagged rigs in the Gulf of Mexico.

Different types of rigs are classified differently, and the Marshall Islands assigned the Deepwater Horizon to a category that permitted lower staffing levels.

“Over the years, the manning dwindled down and down,” said Douglas Harold Brown, chief mechanic aboard the Deepwater Horizon, who had been assigned to the floating drilling rig since shortly after it was manufactured in 2000. “I believe that safety was compromised by this,” he said in an interview.

Brown’s lawyer and others say the Marshall Islands licensed the Deepwater Horizon in a way that allowed rig operator Transocean Ltd. to place an oil drilling expert — the so-called offshore installation manager — ahead of a licensed sea captain in making decisions on the day of the explosion.

The dual command structure created confusion that delayed an effective response to the growing crisis aboard the Deepwater Horizon, he and others allege.

Officials at Transocean and the Marshall Islands reject the claims. They say they fulfilled all requirements of the law and met the highest industry standards, and those of the Coast Guard.

Brian Kennedy, a spokesman for Transocean, called the complaints “egregiously unfounded and inflammatory.” The disorganization reported by crew members who survived the Deepwater Horizon explosion was the result of a tragic and unexpected disaster, not deficiencies in manning or safety standards on the part of Transocean, Kennedy said.

“At the end of the day, I think the fact that 115 people got off the rig that night will be viewed as a testament to the training, skill and heroic acts of dozens of crew members,” he said.

The Marshall Islands deputy maritime minister, Thomas Heinan, said the manning requirements aboard the Deepwater Horizon were “equal to those of the U.S. and in accordance with international standards.”

A deepwater oil rig floats above the well, connected by thousands of feet of pipe, and is kept in position by thrusters and elaborate navigational systems.

Since World War II, thousands of ships and rigs from the U.S. and other industrialized countries have been registered in less-developed nations like the Marshall Islands.

Some members of Congress are expressing concern about the Marshall Islands and other countries that outsource their inspection responsibilities to private companies. Coast Guard officials confirm that more rigorous inspection procedures apply to the relatively small number of rigs registered in the U.S.

A foreign vessel will be reviewed by the Coast Guard, but the inspection is relatively cursory, relying on inspection reports prepared by outside firms that have been paid directly by the owners of the vessel.

The federal Minerals Management Service, which also has a role in overseeing offshore oil operations, deals only with issues “below the waterline” of the floating rig. It was not responsible for rig staffing, command structure or other above-water operations.

John Konrad, a licensed captain who publishes a maritime blog and is consulting with survivors, said oil rigs should be under the command of licensed sea captains.

“On the Deepwater Horizon you had the guy who does the drilling plans able to make the call on safety,” Konrad said.

Such dual command structures would not be accepted for U.S.-flagged operations, experts say.

The Deepwater Horizon captain testified to investigators last month that he conferred with the drilling manager before he attempted to disconnect the rig. By the time a crew member decided on his own to push the emergency disconnect, it was too late.

Kennedy, the spokesman for Transocean, said, “Having two complementary positions that reflect the dual functionality of the rig, as the Horizon did, provides a clear but collaborative chain of command that has been employed by the industry for decades.”

But Steven Gordon, a maritime lawyer in Houston representing Brown, six other survivors and the family of one of the 11 workers killed in the blast, said, “This course of action cost men their lives.”

“It led to a jumble of disorganization on the Deepwater Horizon at the moment when organization was needed the most,” he said.

UPDATE 4: Associated Press Scientists: Oil leaking up to 2.52M gallons daily By RAY HENRY, Associated Press Writer

NEW ORLEANS – Scientists provided a new estimate for the amount of oil gushing from a ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday that indicates it could be worse than previously thought.

A government panel of scientists said that the ruptured well is leaking between 1.47 million and 2.52 million gallons a day of oil. That is an increase over previous estimates that put the maximum size of the spill at 2.1 million gallons per day.

UPDATE 3 :Appearing on the Alex Jones Show earlier in the week, pastor Lindsey Williams said that gases — Hydrogen Sulfide, Benzene, Methylene Chloride, and other toxic gases — pose a greater risk to human health than the presence of oil washing up on Gulf of Mexico beaches. Williams said the EPA is not reporting on the amount of gases escaping from the BP oil gusher. However, the second video below suggests the EPA has released data on the amount of Hydrogen Sulfide and Benzene in the air in Louisiana. READ ENTIRE ARTICLE :

The past few days I’ve been bombarded from several directions about “Volatile Organic Compounds”. My strong suggestion is for you to read up on the term, and learn more about the impact of chemicals that are causing an alarming & significant health risk to residents near the British Petroleum oil spill. The facts are out there, and undeniable. The levels of toxic, if not lethal VOC’s in the atmosphere are barreling towards the Gulf Region’s population, and; at minimum; any significant weather pattern shift northward will expose the entire eastern region of the United States to cancer causing VOC’s. The EPA has tested the highest concentrations, and public reports indicate “off the charts” readings of unacceptable levels of carcinogenic compounds.

Before I get to my “beef” about the hazards, let me remind you that I’m not a news reporter, nor am I politically correct — I cater to absolutely know one but my readers who are sometimes shocked at my perspective on some topics. If you’ve ever been “shocked” by one of my topics, I’ll also remind you that I didn’t create some of the nightmare scenario’s we’re all presently living in. I’m not a scientist, nor am I a government official charged with protecting & serving the public, so I challenge ~THEM~ to do all the fact checking, research & mass communication to inform the public. This post is merely an alarming report on public official negligence & incompetence.

—Enough chit-chat. Let’s get to the point that British Petroleum, the US Government, and the news media refuses to address. Based on the available data; these entities are aware that people will die from exposure to these VOC’s. If they are not, or claim they are not aware; then they should immediately be fired and arrested for criminal negligence. SPECIAL NOTE: Federal Law Enforcement needs to start doing their job as well; lives are at stake; they can’t keep throwing their hands in the air & saying “…oh well, this is a civil matter…”.

As I learn more about “Volatile Organic Compounds” (VOC’s), I’m discovering that this is the single most important risk facing residents near the British Petroleum oil spill — the lame-stream media, U.S. Government, and of course, British Petroleum have neglected to inform the public, but I’m confident that the US Government’s failure is directly attributed to incompetence, not any conspiracy theory — I’d be giving them more credit than they deserve if they were to be ~that~ smart.

What pisses me off even more is that there are volumes of information scattered throughout the internet about E.P.A. tests, air quality warnings, human health risk warnings, and critical information that should immediately be getting to the general public via the media, but it seems that the news media and government is blatantly refusing to inform the public of these risks.

Since your illustrious government-controlled news media neglects to tell you, let me do everyone a favor & break the news. The toxic and lethal organic compounds being released into the atmosphere will cause cancer, death, and birth deformities. Scientists from the private sector as well as the E.P.A. already know of the particulates in the air; the extreme risks to human health; and have quietly published their findings on the internet; as if to protect themselves against future accusations that the public was never informed or warned.

It’s as irresponsible as if your local fire department showed up at your home at 2 am; saw a fire burning in the bushes in front of your house; then folded up a hand written note & placed it under your front door mat that read, “Dear Sir/Madame, we noticed a huge fire in front of your house & wanted to alert you to the danger and certain death if the fire is not contained.” Then, you wake up & discover that the bush fire has torched the entire front of your home — the fire department arrives to put out the inferno & says, “…we warned you at 2 am…didn’t you read the note we buried under your door mat? It’s your responsibility to check for warnings under your door mat, per the very fine print we listed on our website, anytime there is imminent death or destruction, the county fire department has an obligation to immediately inform you via a hand written note under your mat —- it’s your responsibility to check for notes under your mat….”

Lethal & toxic levels of hydrogen sulfide, benzene, methalene chloride are floating in the air over the oil spill. There’s a very high probability that the residents who will certainly be exposed to the air surrounding the spill will die, suffer from debilitating diseases, as well as witness numerous birth deformities as a result.

Why aren’t people being told? Better yet; how could our government officials be so arrogant to pocket taxpayer dollars and refuse to at least serve the public by at least forewarning them. Could it be that they don’t want the economy to be harmed, so therefore they’ll keep things quiet?

How could our government — the taxpayer funded government — fail to tell the citizens who pay them?

For now, continue to send your taxes to the US Government without any accountability whatsoever, and also continue to purchase chips, Coca-Cola, and gasoline from British Petroleum. Most importantly, for now you will have to do your own fact finding & research — the information is out there, you just have to go find our for yourself that every breath you are taking is going to kill you slowly. Again, be sure to click the LIKE button above so that you can personally do your part at circumventing the failed system we have in place.

By “their” standard; I guess for “national security” reasons my blog informs a relatively small number of innocent civilians — pass the word on to the unknowing residents in the Gulf, but do it quietly……………………we don’t want to cause a panic by telling people what they should know.

Geeeez.

Why do I feel like I’m one of the only one’s warning the public? Way too much pressure for this itty-bitty blogger.

I’ll report…..you decide. Several major, reputable news outlets published reports that are not being covered by the main stream media; I suspect mainly because Apple-Pie Americans would never consider the possibility that the world around them is not as real as it seems, so why even bother their happy-go-lucky-day with “conspiracy theories”.

Today we received news that Goldman Sachs sold over 44% of their holding of British Petroleum stocks two weeks prior to the oil platform exploding. Infowars.com published the following facts relating to the sale of BP stocks:

The latest revelations in the British Petroleum gulf drilling disaster indicate that international banking firm Goldman Sachs sold over 4.68 million shares of British Petroleum stock just two days prior to the explosion of the British Petroleum drilling platform. This sell-off of petroleum stock is now recognized as the largest single liquidation of petroleum stocks in the history of modern markets. With this liquidation taking place just 48 hours prior to the gulf explosion which now looms as America’s worst ever ecological disaster, any intelligent mind must ask these questions, “Was this sell-off an act of insider trading? Did someone at Goldman Sachs have foreknowledge of this disaster? Could the disaster have been man-made? If so, who would be the ultimate beneficiary of this event?” READ ENTIRE ARTICLE HERE

Texas Congressman Ron Paul’s website, DailyPaul.com reports the same, and also references public data from MoneyCentral.MSN.com.

On May 5, 2010, the Examiner.com, Los Angeles published an April 30, 2010 Huffington Post story stating:

In what is looming as another public relations predicament for Goldman Sachs, the banking giant admitted today that it made “a substantial financial bet against the Gulf of Mexico” one day before the sinking of an oil rig in that body of water.

The new revelations came to light after government investigators turned up new emails from Goldman employee Fabrice “Fabulous Fab” Tourre in which he bragged to a girlfriend that the firm was taking a “big short” position on the Gulf.

“One oil rig goes down and we’re going to be rolling in dough,” Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. “Suck it, fishies and birdies!”

Are you as sick to your stomach as I am.

Enough said, but I really don’t feel like talking to people who deny what’s happening all around us. I’m sincerely starting to believe that the denier’s and nay-sayer’s are actually being paid to counter & conceal the possible truth. Why else would any sensible person try to dispute the “theory” that Goldman Sachs is actually a corporate terrorist operation?

Is it all a coincidence, or could individual Bankster’s actually be conspiring to profit from a pre-meditated, man-made disasters? Why isn’t the main stream media asking these same questions?

By Edmund Conway
Published: 8:21AM BST 27 May 2010

This financial crisis is worse than the sub-prime crash of 2008 because the sums are so much bigger and it is governments that are in dire straits. Edmund Conway explains the dangers.

Mervyn King, the Bank of England Governor, summed it up best: “Dealing with a banking crisis was difficult enough,” he said the other week, “but at least there were public-sector balance sheets on to which the problems could be moved. Once you move into sovereign debt, there is no answer; there’s no backstop.”

In other words, were this a computer game, the politicians would be down to their last life. Any mistake now and it really is Game Over. Or to pick a slightly more traditional game, it is rather like a session of pass-the-parcel which is fast approaching the end of the line.

The European financial crisis may look and smell rather different to the American banking crisis of a couple of years ago, but strip away the details – the breakdown of the euro, the crumbling of the Spanish banking system to take just two – and what you are left with is the next leg of a global financial crisis. Politicians temporarily “solved” the sub-prime crisis of 2007 and 2008 by nationalising billions of pounds’ worth of bank debt. While this helped reinject a little confidence into markets, the real upshot was merely to transfer that debt on to public-sector balance sheets.

This kind of card-shuffle trick has a long-established pedigree: after the dotcom bust, Alan Greenspan slashed US interest rates to (then) unprecedented lows, which helped dull the pain, but only at the cost of generating the housing bubble that fed sub-prime. It is not so different to the Ponzi scheme carried out by Bernard Madoff, except that unlike his hedge fund fraud, this one is being carried out in full public view.

The problem is that this has to stop somewhere, and that gasping noise over the past couple of weeks is the sound of millions of investors realising, all at once, that the music might have stopped. Having leapt back into the market in 2009 and fuelled the biggest stock-market leap since the recovery from the Wall Street Crash in the early 1930s, investors have suddenly deserted. London’s FTSE 100 has lost 15 per cent of its value in little more than a month. The mayhem on European bourses is even worse, while on Wall Street the Dow Jones teeters on the brink of the talismanic 10,000 level.

Whatever yardstick you care to choose – share-price moves, the rates at which banks lend to each other, measures of volatility – we are now in a similar position to 2008.

Europe’s problem is that the unfortunate game of pass-the-parcel came at just the wrong moment. It resulted in a hefty extra amount of debt being lumped on to its member states’ balance sheets when they were least-equipped to deal with it.

Europe was always heading for a crunch. For years, the German and Dutch economies pulled in one direction (high saving, low spending) while the Club Med bloc – Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy (and their Celtic outpost Ireland) – pulled in the other. At some point, there was always going to be a problem, given that these two economic blocs were yoked together in the same currency, controlled by the same central bank. By triggering the global recession and shovelling an unexpected load of debt on to Greece’s balance sheet, the financial crisis has effectively smoked out the European folly.

The Club Med nations – and in many senses Britain – were not so different to sub-prime households: they borrowed cheap in order to raise their standards of living, ignoring the question of whether they could afford to take on so much debt. But, as King points out, sub-prime households – and the banks that lent to them – can usually be bailed out. The International Monetary Fund simply does not have enough cash to bail out a major economy like Spain, Italy or, heaven forfend, Britain. So, again, we find ourselves in unknown territory.

There are plenty of episodes in history when countries have been as indebted as they are now, but they are all associated with periods of war. History shows that when nations reach as high a level of indebtedness as Greece, and have as few prospects of growth, they will almost certainly default. Indeed, the IMF, which has pretty good experience of fiscal crises, privately recommended that Greece restructure its debt (a kind of soft default, renegotiating payment terms). It was refused point-blank by the European authorities.

To understand why, step back for a moment. It is fashionable to compare the current situation to the Lehman Brothers collapse, but that understates its severity. The sub-prime property market in the US, together with its slightly less toxic relatives, represented a $2 trillion mound of debt. The combined public and private debt of the most troubled European countries – Greece, Portugal, Spain and so on – is closer to $9 trillion.

Moreover, whereas the pain from sub-prime was spread out relatively widely, with investors hailing from both sides of the Atlantic, the owners of the suspect European debt tend almost exclusively to be, gulp, Europeans. No one is suggesting all of this debt will go bad, but the European policymakers fear that the merest hint that Greece might default would spark a chain reaction that would cause a more profound crisis than in 2008.

This morning I read an article by Joshua Rhett Miller – FOXNews.com titled: ‘Everybody Draw Mohammed’ Page Briefly Vanishes Due to Facebook Glitch

What caught my attention was Facebook’s official response: “We want Facebook to be a place where people can openly discuss issues and express their views, while respecting the rights and feelings of others.” the company said in a statement to FoxNews.com.

I call “bulls#@$” on Facebook. This past weekend I tried fervently to reserve a page name that expressed how I felt about Goldman Sachs, and it was apparent that censorship is built into their automated systems. It’s blatantly apparent that automated FaceBook censors are protecting Goldman Sachs. Below are a few screen shots of my failed attempts to reserve various page names.

If Facebook wants to eliminate jobs with their automated “A.C.P.” system as well as violate our Constitutional rights, maybe they should outsource their entire censorship operation to China. At least China does a better job keeping HUMANS employed in the censorship business.

Dear Facebook: As a US Corporation; If you’re truly concerned about “respecting the rights and feelings of others” you shouldn’t mess with the right highest on everyone’s list (especially mine) —- the Constitution — because when you do, we freedom lovers tend to express our feelings a little bit louder.

If you don't see what's happening, let me reveal it to you: Banksters are skirting US regulation & constitution to ship money offshore to foreign central banks.

Almost every US Corporation will do and say anything to keep us spending money, regardless of what they know about the fragility of our entire financial system. Bankster’s are now using world governments as patsies to commit the largest heist in world history. Stealing a trillion dollars from US citizens proved to be too difficult, as they had to receive congressional approval to bail themselves out. Their recent scam involves using the world’s central banks to bypass democracy & funnel money to offshore entities without oversight. Just think; the IMF, partially funded by the US Treasury; can operate freely & independently as they steal US currency for their cronies without being held accountable to the US taxpayer.

If the American taxpayer ever knew that $1 trillion isn’t going to be nearly enough to save the world from a $700 trillion derivative problem, do you think we’d agree to bailing out the EU with $50 billion?

So-called financial experts and analysts in the U.S. who never warned us about the financial/debt crisis are now putting out propaganda regarding our risk and exposure to the EU bailout. If you don’t see what’s happening, let me reveal it to you: Banksters are skirting US regulation & the US Constitution to ship money offshore to foreign central banks. The US Treasury is the pawn Bankster’s have chosen to filter $50 billion to the IMF —– like a thief in the night. Bankster’s will never tell you the truth about our economic outlook because if they did, we’d all default on our mortgage loans and stop spending money altogether. They’re delaying the inevitable, as they steal in $50-100 billion increments.

The US Government doesn’t want us to know the truth either, nor do they want us to know that they’re funneling taxpayer money to foreign, off-shore banks. Do you remember the day in 2008 when Secretary Paulson said, “….all we need is $750 billion to save the world from the brink of disaster?….”. $30+ trillion later, we’re still crafting trillion dollar EU bailouts.

Yesterday I got fed up after I heard the US Treasury pledged $50 billion to the EU on our behalf, so I called them.

The representatives at the US Treasury evaded very direct questions I’ve asked them about why, and on what authority they’ve given $50 billion dollars to foreign Bankster’s on our behalf. (In fact, almost every time I called the US Treasury press office to speak to someone, it seemed as though their office is run by disorganized teenagers who fumble with the phone, mumble incoherent excuses as to why my questions couldn’t be answered, and when I finally reached a responsible person, they sent me a list of talking points that never answered my questions directly.)

Ladies and Gentleman, the entire criminal Banking system has bought-and-paid-for laws that allow them to skirt regulation & oversight, and they’ve built one of the largest powder kegs that’ll destroy the entire global economy; the $700 trillion derivative’s scam.

You see, derivative’s are ticking time bombs that should actually be called “insurance”, but by calling them something else (like derivative’s), Bankster’s are able to get around the regulatory system set up for the insurance industry to minimize risk. Now, we have a $700 trillion ticking time bomb that was built without oversight, regulation, and accountability. (If you don’t know how much $700 trillion dollars is, Google “GDP of the global economy” — the entire world GDP is estimated at $70 trillion). As these risky insurance policies (called derivatives) have to be paid out, Bankster’s are losing their shirts, and now they’re extorting trillions more in bailout funds to cover what they knew all along were bad, risky bets.

The US Treasury is merely a high-rollin gambler with the audacity to give foreign Bankster’s $54 billion stolen from our hard working US taxpayers. What’s worse, they have an incurable gambling addiction don’t know when to stop stealing money to offset their losses.

The Treasury is lying to you when they say “The IMF has ample financing…” No, Ladies and Gentlemen, there are no countries or banks that have enough money to cover the $700 Trillion dollars in bad bets that were allowed to be placed. The US Treasury is merely trying to cover their betting losses, and do so by going around the American people. The New World Order has been set up to bypass & avoid the US Constitution.

We cannot afford $50 billion dollars to cover a Bankster/government gambling problem. We cannot afford to let any government agency raid the safe and throw money to foreigners without accountability to the American taxpayer.

If it’s legal; just remember who paid the politicians to pass laws that allowed them to get away with it.

Our government has been corrupted by Banksters, and we need to get rid of both entities if they choose to continue stealing from us.

Wake up people. When are we going to Storm the Bastille? They’ve destroyed the US financial system, now they’ve moved on to implode the entire Global Economy. Resist the New World Order mainly because its a government being formed by Bankster’s who have seized power, control, and money without democratic elections. They are sucking every last penny from us & think we can’t do anything about it.

Let’s show them what happens when we all rise up.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING BULLSHIT TALKING POINTS THE US TREASURY ISSUED TO JUSTIFY THIEVERY OF $50 BILLION

Nonpartisan Group Led by Nobel Winner Calls for Stronger Financial Reforms

By MATTHEW JAFFE

ABC News March 2, 2010

Even as many Americans still struggle to recover from the country’s worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, another crisis – one that will be even worse than the current one – is looming, according to a new report from a group of leading economists, financiers, and former federal regulators.

In the report, the panel, that includes Rob Johnson of the United Nations Commission of Experts on Finance and bailout watchdog Elizabeth Warren, warns that financial regulatory reform measures proposed by the Obama administration and Congress must be beefed up to prevent banks from continuing to engage in high risk investing that precipitated the near collapse of the U.S. economy in 2008.

The report warns that the country is now immersed in a “doomsday cycle” wherein banks use borrowed money to take massive risks in an attempt to pay big dividends to shareholders and big bonuses to management – and when the risks go wrong, the banks receive taxpayer bailouts from the government.

“Risk-taking at banks,” the report cautions, “will soon be larger than ever.”

Without more stringent reforms, “another crisis – a bigger crisis that weakens both our financial sector and our larger economy – is more than predictable, it is inevitable,” Johnson says in the report, commissioned by the nonpartisan Roosevelt Institute.

The institute’s chief economist, Nobel Prize-winner Joseph Stiglitz, calls the report “an important point of departure for a debate on where we are on the road to regulatory reform.”

The report blasts some of Washington’s key players. Johnson writes, “Our government leaders have shown little capacity to fix the flaws in our market system.” Two other panelists, Simon Johnson, a professor at MIT, and Peter Boone of the Centre for Economic Performance, voiced similar criticisms.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner “oversaw policy as the bubble was inflating,” write Johnson and Boone, and “these same men are now designing our ‘rescue.’”

The study says that “In 2008-09, we came remarkably close to another Great Depression. Next time we may not be so ‘lucky.’ The threat of the doomsday cycle remains strong and growing,” they say. “What will happen when the next shock hits? We may be nearing the stage where the answer will be – just as it was in the Great Depression – a calamitous global collapse.”
