On March 9, 2017, then-FBI Director James Comey met with congressional leaders, the \u201cGang of 8,\u201d to brief them on the status of their counterintelligence investigation of former President Donald Trump. He met first with Senate leaders and then with House leaders.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/header>\n
Comey was armed with a seven-page memo containing talking points that had been prepared the previous day by former FBI lawyer Lisa Page.<\/p>\n

According to RealClearInvestigations\u2019<\/a> Paul Sperry, the newly declassified memo and additional documents show that Comey \u201cdeceived the House, Senate and the Justice Department about the substance and strength of evidence\u201d against Trump. Sperry reported that Page\u2019s memo was \u201criddled with half-truths, outright falsehoods and critical omissions\u201d and that Comey\u2019s \u201cmisrepresentations\u201d prompted both the Senate and the House to open investigations of their own.<\/p>\n

Comey told congressional leaders about reports the FBI had received in 2016 from a former confidential human source (who turned out to be Christopher Steele), which claimed that former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort<\/a> and junior campaign advisor Carter Page<\/a> had allegedly conspired with the Russian government to sway the election.<\/p>\n

The informant, Comey explained, \u201ctold the FBI that Manafort initially \u2018managed\u2019 the relationship between Russian government officials and the Trump campaign, using Carter Page as an intermediary.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, Comey told lawmakers that \u201c[Carter] Page was reported to have had \u2018secret meetings\u2019 in early July 2016 with a named individual in Russia\u2019s presidential administration during which they discussed Russia\u2019s release of damaging information on Hillary Clinton in exchange for alterations to the GOP platform regarding U.S. policy towards Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n

By the time of these briefings, the FBI already knew none of these allegations were true.<\/p>\n

In the memo, [Lisa] Page advised Comey that if pressed, he should tell lawmakers that \u201csome\u201d of the reporting \u201chas been corroborated\u201d and that the CHS\u2019 \u201creporting in this matter is derived primarily from a Russian-based source.\u201d<\/p>\n

At that point, none<\/em> of the reporting had been corroborated. And we\u2019ve known for a long time that none of it ever was<\/em> corroborated. Also, both their CHS, Steele and Steele\u2019s primary sub-source, Igor Danchenko<\/a>, were America-based.<\/p>\n

Not only did Comey withhold their identities from the Gang of 8, he did not inform them that Danchenko worked for Steele, that Steele was collecting dirt for the Clinton campaign or that Steele did not have \u201cany sources inside the Kremlin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Danchenko was arrested in November of 2021, for lying to the FBI during multiple interviews in 2017 about \u201cwhere and how he got his information,\u201d The Washington Post<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

His was the third indictment in special counsel John Durham\u2019s investigation<\/a> into the origins of the FBI\u2019s investigation into Trump-Russia collusion. His trial is set to begin on Oct. 11, according to Fox News<\/a>. Sperry noted that Page\u2019s memo was declassified as part of pre-trial discovery process.<\/p>\n

As mentioned earlier, Comey did not identify Steele or Danchenko by name to the lawmakers. He referred to Steele by the codename, \u201cCROWN.\u201d (As per screenshot.) Sperry pointed out that Steele had not worked for British Intelligence in years, but was likely trying to give the impression that the \u201cdossier was a product of British intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nor did he tell Congress that the FBI had fired Steele after he leaked to the media. Sperry concluded: \u201cComey hid the truth about his star informant from the nation\u2019s top lawmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The memo stated, \u201cIf asked about CROWN\/Steele\u201d by lawmakers, Comey was to tell them only that \u201cCROWN, a former FBI CHS, is a former friendly foreign intelligence service employee who reported for about three years, and some of whose reporting has been corroborated.\u201d<\/p>\n

None of that was true.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the FBI was submitting the dossier in their renewal applications to the\u00a0FISA court for warrants to spy on Carter Page.<\/p>\n

Sperry reported that the former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe<\/a> and former counterintelligence official Peter Strzok<\/a> misled former acting Attorney General Dana Boente<\/a> during a March 6, 2017, briefing by referring to Steele\u2019s dossier as \u201cCROWN source reporting\u201d as Comey would do three days later.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Strzok told Boente that he opened the investigation after Trump called upon Russia to find Hillary Clinton\u2019s deleted emails. You may recall Trump\u2019s sarcastic remark<\/a> during a campaign event in July 2016. He said, \u201cRussia if you\u2019re listening, I hope you are able to find the 30 thousand emails that are missing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The reality, Sperry wrote, was this incident is not mentioned on the documents filed to open the case and Trump\u2019s remark came after \u201cStrzok stated the FBI determined probable cause.\u201d<\/p>\n

Strzok and McCabe told Boente that \u201cthe secret FISA monitoring of Page\u2019s phone and emails was \u2018fruitful.’\u201d It was not.<\/p>\n

On March 20, 2017, testifying before the House Intelligence Committee, Comey<\/a> announced the FBI had opened an investigation to determine if any members of the Trump campaign had colluded with the Russian government to help win the election.<\/p>\n

He stated: \u201cThe FBI, as part of our counter-intelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government\u2019s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, and that\u00a0includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was\u00a0any coordination between the campaign and Russia\u2019s efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n

His remarks triggered a media frenzy around the former president which truth be told, has never really stopped.<\/p>\n
