She argued in Orwellian fashion that it was the victim of \u2018disinformation.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Jankowicz claimed the board was meant \u201cto bring best practices to bear, and to make sure that we were up with the latest research, the latest trends, in disinformation and countering it and make sure that work was being done in a way that protected freedom of speech, protected civil rights, civil liberties, and privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, the sympathetic view, to you, is that the Disinformation Board was the victim of disinformation. Is that how you feel?\u201d Stelter asked her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh, it absolutely was the victim of disinformation,\u201d she said. \u201cSo, all of these narratives, that the Disinformation Governance Board was going to be this \u2018Ministry of Truth,\u2019 and all of the harassment and disinformation that was directed against me, was based on that falsehood, based on that falsehood that was knowingly peddled by many people in the conservative media ecosystem and on Capitol Hill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stelter then pressed her on the events that led to her ouster as the would-be Disinfo Czar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I have a lot of misgivings about the way things went down and I think the first thing to point out, Brian, is that there was a disproportionate focus on me, given my level of power within the department,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not allowed to speak on my own behalf, and frankly, all the communications decisions that were being made about how to talk about the board were made above my pay grade, and above my level of decision-making,\u201d Jankowicz added. \u201cI was the executive director, but there were a lot of people that were involved that didn\u2019t take advice frankly that I had given them.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Stelter didn\u2019t quibble with the Ministry of Truth\u2019s mission, but had some \u2018helpful\u2019 criticism from a Public Relations point-of-view.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook, I would start with the name,\u201d he said. \u201cEven just the name, right, Nina, it sounds Orwellian. And any PR professional would say don\u2019t call it that, you know? There were just dumb mistakes made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Disinformation Board\u2019s name \u201cbelies the fact that it was meant to be an internal governing mechanism, governing how the Department of Homeland Security did its work on disinformation, not governing the internet,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that was one of the reasons that I ended up making the choice to resign, right?\u201d Jankowicz said. \u201cI felt like the government had just rolled over, to the critics, who had completely spun this narrative out of control based on absolutely nothing and reality and the fact that they weren\u2019t able to defend me, the person that they had chosen, the experts that they had chosen to lead this board and safeguard this work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just didn\u2019t feel like it was worth it, especially given the fact that my family was receiving threats,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>So, Jankowicz clearly refuses to take any blame for the ill-conceived nature of the Disinformation Board and instead decides to play the victim and blame the Biden administration for its failure.
