It is living under a kind of totalitarian culture which has never existed in my lifetime, and is much worse in many ways than the Soviet Union before Gorbachev,\u201d Chomsky said Friday on \u201cUnder the Skin with Russell Brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo back to the 1970s, people in Soviet Russia could access BBC, Voice of America, German television if they wanted to find out the news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chomsky went on to argue that the ongoing Ukraine conflict has prompted the Western governments and tech companies to engage in unprecedented censorship, preventing the American people from hearing information from Russia\u2019s point of view.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf today, in the United States, you want to find out what [Foreign Minister Sergei] Lavrov of Russia is saying, can\u2019t do it. It\u2019s barred. Americans are not permitted to hear what Russians are saying. Can\u2019t get Russian television, can\u2019t access Russian sources,\u201d Chomsky said, adding that also includes \u201cfine American journalists\u201d who happen to do business with Russian media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou want to find out what the adversary is saying, which is of the utmost importance, you can maybe tune into Indian state television and find it out, or you can read it on Al-Jazeera,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the United States has imposed constraints on freedom of access to information which are astonishing, which in fact go beyond what was the case in post-Stalin Soviet Russia,\u201d Chomsky added.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/28\/tech\/big-tech-russia-ukraine\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Big Tech barred Russian state media<\/a> like RT and Sputnik from disseminating across platforms like Facebook and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/3\/11\/22972911\/youtube-rt-russian-sputnik-block-state-media-globally#:~:text=The%20Russian%20government%20has%20responded%20to%20tech%20companies%E2%80%99,banning%20Instagram%20in%20the%20country%20starting%20March%2014th.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube<\/a> in the name of fighting \u201cdisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twitter also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2020\/sep\/29\/russia-accuses-twitter-of-censorship-after-state-o\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">censored<\/a> Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry from appearing in its search results, prompting Russia to call on the social media platform to \u201crevise their policy that limits the audience\u2019s right to access to information and to renounce the use of anti-democratic tools of unfair competition between American mainstream news outlets and alternative media sources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Independent journalist Glenn Greenwald <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ggreenwald\/status\/1550941232259547136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted<\/a> that defending free speech used to be a \u201ccentral\u201d virtue of the left before it became radicalized by its \u201cauthoritarian wing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is how the American Left used to think before its authoritarian wing that supports censorship, Big Tech control of political discourse, and the US security state and its various narratives about Russia became dominant,\u201d he wrote on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChomsky, like everyone, has had some bad moments, including his call for the unvaccinated to be housed in camps and his Vote Dem mania. But he has never wavered an inch in his unyielding defense of free speech and contempt for censorship. That value was once central to leftists,\u201d Greenwald added.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, Chomsky was immediately chastised by the left for criticizing U.S. censorship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch the full
