Newsmax reported<\/a> this morning on Pope Francis\u2019s recent comments.<\/p>\n Pope Francis said the need to reform the United Nations was \u201cmore than obvious\u201d after the Covid-19 pandemic and the Ukraine war exposed its limits, in an extract of his new book published Sunday.<\/p>\n The Argentine pontiff said Russia\u2019s February invasion of Ukraine highlighted the need to ensure the current multilateral structure \u2014 especially the UN Security Council \u2014 finds \u201cmore agile and effective ways of resolving conflicts\u201d.<\/p>\n \u201cIn wartime, it is essential to affirm that we need more multilateralism and a better multilateralism,\u201d but the UN is no longer fit for \u201cnew realities\u201d, he added in an extract published by La Stampa daily.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The organisation was founded to prevent the horrors of two World Wars from happening again, but although the threat represented by those conflicts was still alive, \u201ctoday\u2019s world is no longer the same\u201d, said Francis.<\/p>\n \u201cThe necessity of these reforms became more than obvious after the pandemic\u201d when the current multilateral system \u201cshowed all its limits\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n Francis denounced the unequal distribution of vaccines as a \u201cglaring example\u201d of the law of the strongest prevailing over solidarity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n An individual by the name of Hans Despain reported this morning at Yahoo<\/a> on the Pope\u2019s recent actions. Since being elected to the papacy Pope Francis insists that we need a new economic system that better provides basic needs for the global poor, along with guaranteed work and land.<\/p>\n Regarding the environment, Pope Francis contends we \u201cmust not be indifferent or resigned to the loss of biodiversity and the destruction of ecosystems, often caused by our irresponsible and selfish behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n He warns: \u201cBecause of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by their very existence. \u2026 We have no such right.\u201d<\/p>\n For Pope Francis, economic destitution and environmental destruction are symbiotically linked. \u201cClimate change is,\u201d according to Pope Francis, displacing people, increasing poverty and \u201ccontributing to the heart-rending refugee crisis. The world\u2019s poor, though least responsible for climate change, are most vulnerable and already suffering its impact.\u201d<\/p>\n Pope Francis emphasizes globally there are a series of \u201cprofoundly interconnected crises\u201d in \u201cthe areas of health care, the environment, food supplies and the economy,\u201d not to mention regional wars, \u201csocial, humanitarian and ethical crises,\u201d all calling for a \u201cnew vision,\u201d to \u201crethink the future of the world,\u201d and establish \u201ca renewed sense of shared responsibility for our world.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The Pope attacks economist Milton Friedman:<\/p>\n Pope Francis contends that supply-side economics is mistaken and Friedman and Hayek are false prophets. The pope worries that too many \u201cpeople continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world.
