Bush-era neocon talking points, arguing that conservatives concerned with the protracted proxy war against Russia in Ukraine are simply \u201cPutin apologists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs Russia continues its unconscionable war of aggression to Ukraine, I believe that conservatives must make it clear that Putin must stop and Putin will pay,\u201d Pence said. \u201cThere can be no room in the conservative movement for apologists to Putin. There is only room in this movement for champions of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, I know there is a rising chorus in our party, including some new voices to our movement, who would have us disengaged with the wider world,\u201d Pence continued. \u201cBut appeasement has never worked, ever, in history. And now more than ever, we need a conservative movement committed to America\u2019s role as leader of the free world and as a vanguard of American values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a veiled jab at Trump supporters, Pence warned against \u201cunprincipled populism\u201d threatening the establishment\u2019s efforts to carry out an expensive endless war enterprise in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur movement cannot forsake the foundational commitment that we have to security, to limited government, to liberty and to life. But nor can we allow our movement to be led astray by the siren song of unprincipled populism that\u2019s unmoored from our oldest traditions and most cherished values,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-ZkvaA-N2yc?start=991\">VIDEO<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me say: This movement and the party that it animates must remain the movement of a strong national defense, limited government and traditional moral values and life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite Pence\u2019s inferences, Ukraine is not a democracy at all, it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cato.org\/commentary\/whitewashing-ukraines-corruption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corrupt autocracy<\/a> completely at odds with American values like <a href=\"https:\/\/jonathanturley.org\/2022\/03\/21\/zelenskyy-bans-opposition-parties-in-ukraine-in-blow-to-free-speech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">free speech<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And showering Ukraine with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/19\/politics\/us-weapons-ukraine-intelligence\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tens of billions of dollars<\/a> of taxpayer money in the throes of an inflationary depression doesn\u2019t sound like the actions of a \u201climited government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recall that former President George W. Bush justified the invasion of Iraq in 2003 as an effort to protect democracy.
