Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said he hopes Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk, acts “responsibly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“He’s going to be in a position of responsibility with respect to an important platform, and we hope that he exercises that position responsibly,” Mayorkas told ABC News Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas during an interview at DHS headquarters in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Musk, who\u00a0acquired Twitter for roughly $44 billion last week, and has spent his first-week making radical changes to the platform and pushing for free speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayorkas focused on a post that Musk made, and retweeted and responded to something that Hillary Clinton had posted, claiming that Musk had removed the inaccurate post “rather rapidly.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayorkas said that, ultimately, it’s up to Congress to regulate social media companies. The government, however, is within its purview to combat mis- and disinformation, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
