Tesla and SpaceX head Elon Musk has started a new artificial intelligence company called X.AI Corp, according to state business records. The move comes after Musk changed Twitter\u2019s official name to X Corp. and hinted at plans to create an\u00a0\u201ceverything app\u201d<\/em>\u00a0simply dubbed\u00a0\u201cX.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The AI start-up was incorporated in Nevada on March 9, state filings show, with Musk listed as the company\u2019s director. Former Morgan Stanley executive Jared Birchall, who also serves as CEO for Musk\u2019s Neuralink venture, was named as secretary.<\/p>\n

According to sources cited by the\u00a0Wall Street Journal<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Financial Times<\/a>\u00a0on Friday, X.AI Corp. will aim to compete with OpenAI, the maker of the increasingly popular AI-based chat program ChatGPT. While Musk helped to found OpenAI in 2015, he left its board of directors three years later and has since grown critical of the firm, saying it had become a\u00a0\u201cclosed source maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

While Musk has yet to reveal his plans for the AI business, he has reportedly assembled a team of researchers and software engineers for the venture and\u00a0\u201csecured thousands of high-powered GPU processors,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0according to FT. The outlet noted that Musk has also held discussions with investors in two of his other companies, SpaceX and Tesla, about putting money into the project.<\/p>\n

The name of the new company is in line with an \u2018X\u2019 theme seen across several of Musk\u2019s businesses, with the billionaire rechristening Twitter Inc. as\u00a0\u201cX Corp.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0earlier this week. He has previously dropped\u00a0cryptic hints<\/a>\u00a0about plans for an\u00a0\u201ceverything app\u201d<\/em>\u00a0called\u00a0\u201cX,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0though it is unclear whether the AI project is related.<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s apparent re-entry into the world of artificial intelligence comes just weeks after he signed an\u00a0open letter<\/a>\u00a0alongside more than 1,000 researchers and tech executives warning that AI could pose\u00a0\u201cprofound risks to society and humanity.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0The letter called for a global\u00a0\u201cpause\u201d<\/em>\u00a0on AI development for\u00a0\u201cat least six months\u201d<\/em>\u00a0in order to\u00a0\u201cgive society a chance to adapt\u201d<\/em>\u00a0to the rapidly-advancing technology.<\/p>\n

During a Tesla event last month, Musk said\u00a0\u201cAI stresses me out,\u201d<\/em>calling it\u00a0\u201cquite dangerous technology\u201d<\/em>\u00a0while admitting\u00a0\u201cI may have done some things to accelerate it.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Given those concerns, it\u2019s unclear what he will seek to do with X.AI Corp., the latest in a long line of tech firms founded or headed by Musk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
