The White House is considering a military plan that would include sending 120,000 troops to the Middle East in response to what the Trump Administration has\u00a0called a dangerous threat\u00a0from Iran, a report said on Monday.<\/p>\n
Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan\u00a0made the proposal to President Trump\u2019s top military aides last Thursday\u00a0as a deterrent to Iran launching an attack of their own or continuing to develop nuclear weapons, according to The New York Times.<\/p>\n
The aggressive stance was reportedly backed by Trump\u2019s national security adviser, John R. Bolton.<\/p>\n
Earlier this month, Bolton\u00a0issued a stern warning to Iran while announcing the deployment\u00a0of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group along with a bomber task force to the Persian Gulf.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe United States is not seeking war with the Iranian regime, but we are fully prepared to respond to any attack, whether by proxy, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or regular Iranian forces,\u201d Bolton said in the statement.<\/p>\n
The proposed deployment of 120,000 troops would be nearly equal to the amount of US troops that invaded Iraq in 2003.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the National Security Council told the Times that the president does not seek \u201cmilitary conflict with Iran\u201d but that they are ready to defend US interests in the region.<\/p>\n
